Oshkosh Diary 2004

The following is a diary of events that I experience before, during and after the 2004 EAA Fly-In and Airshow at Oshkosh, WI.

The cast of characters:    Myself:    Don Parsons                Skyler:    Skyler Parsons, my 6 1/2 year old son

Glenn:    Glenn Peck, aircraft restorer, IA and Friend.        John Mullen:    One of the owners of Creve Coeur airport and owner of the Zenith

Les Grotpeter:    Friend/owner of a Travel Air 4000         Chrissy Grotpeter:    Les's wife, driving the car to OSH.

Al Stix:    Friend/ 1/3 owner of Creve Coeur.                     Les Hekkeila:    Friend/owner of a P-51D Mustang.

Mon., June 28…10:55 PM.   I’m worried. Two of my friends were killed last Sat. in the crash of a Clipwing Monocoupe belonging to one of them.

We, and the Feds, suspect a prop separated from the aircraft. My airplane, a 1946 Fairchild 24, has the same prop manufacturer. This prop, when it works, works great. Unfortunately, has a failure history behind it. As of now, I’m planning on driving with Skyler up to OSH.

I’ve already called Sensenich in preparation for this. They can make me a fixed-pitch wooden prop for my airplane in two-months for $2,385, not including hub. That will rule out going to Oshkosh. I’m checking with all my friends at the airport to see if they have a prop and hub that will work. So far, no luck. May have to make other plans.

Glenn gets back from California Wednesday  morning. We’ll check my prop then and also, hopefully, work on the Zenith. All we need for the Zenith to fly is the new flying wires and a signoff and we’re good to go. Probably fly end of the week/beginning of next.

Great news! Les Grotpeter, above, got his welcome back to the sky letter from the medical examiner. He’s good to go! I went out tonite to take pictures of him “soloing” his Travel Air.

Wed., June 30th…5:10 PM    This morning, I got about the worst possible news I could imagine. John Mullen, 1/3 owner of our airport and the owner of the Zenith biplane, passed away last night unexpectantly from complications from food poisoning. The leaves us in total-limbo in regards to it making Oshkosh this year. Glenn is going to talk with his son, Shawn, to see what he would like for us to do. The airplane is worth more flying. Three magazines have contacted us wanting to do a story on it already. (Classic Wings, AOPA and Vintage Airplane.)

The good news I got today was that Glenn thinks he has found a prop for my airplane. I forgot the Ryan STA has a 200-hp Ranger installed on the front of it. We’ll check out the prop tomorrow to see if it will work. If it will, I’ll ask Al if I can “borrow” it for a couple of weeks. Then I’ll order a new one.

Thur., July 1…4:00 PM         I can’t believe it. Glenn just called me with the news. He had a 45 min chat with John’s two sons this afternoon. Seems like John had the airplane in a trust and the elder son is appointed director of the trust. Both sons emphatically agreed: THE ZENITH SHOULD GO TO OSHKOSH! I’m nearly in tears at this great news. The flying wires are being shipped out of Scotland tomorrow, we should have them by next Thursday. Signoff is expected a week later, so the weekend after my birthday, we will be flying her! That ought to raise the Spirits out at Creve Coeur!

Mon., July 5...8:40 PM      Shown are the 18 lag screws that hold each propeller blade to the mounting ferrule. We took the prop off today and checked the screws. 3 or 4 were ever so slightly loose. We were able to tighten all of them back to the recommended spec, so we put the prop back on the airplane.

Glenn finished the carb heat air box on the Zenith today and got a phone call that the beefed-up wheels will be here Wednesday.

Thurs., July 15...7:30 PM...Sky and I went and flew our Fairchild tonite to prep for OSH. The aircraft flew wonderfully and it was a beautiful night. We did several landings and then went off to enjoy the night.

Mon., July 19...8:00 PM     The good news...the Zenith has flown. It has  the new flying wires and has been signed off by the FAA.

The bad news...John Mullen, owner of the Zenith, passed away June 29th. We have tried everything we know, but we can not get the trust approved in time to take the airplane to Oshkosh. Sean, son of John and the Trustee, went to extreme lengths, way beyond what you would expect to try to get the airplane to Osh. It's just not in the cards this year.

The other bad news...Les Grotpeter will not be able to go with his Travel Air biplane this year. Business concerns demand his immediate and full-time attention.

Les Hekkeila is still taking his Mustang up. Me and Sky are going up like troopers. I will have the Zenith picture book up at OSH if anyone sees this and wants to see them.

July 22, 8:00 PM...We're almost all packed and ready to go. Providence was with us and a cold front is going through tonight, so it should be very nice and clear for our flight up to Dixon and on to Oshkosh.

Hope to see you up there!

(The wing really isn't bent, it's a wide-angle lense that makes it look that way.)
